Many people use the NCSA Beginner's Guide to HTML as a starting point to understanding the hypertext markup language (HTML) used on the World Wide Web. It is an introduction and does not pretend to offer instructions on every aspect of HTML. Links to additional Web-based resources about HTML and other related aspects of preparing files are provided at the end of the guide.
Q: Will you answer my questions concerning HTML coding?
Sorry, but we can no longer answer the volumes of email that we receive about HTML documents, coding, or style. Please refer to the guide, or take a trip to your local bookstore or library. There are scores of books available about HTML.
You can print the guide for your personal use by using your browser's Print feature. (Because of an apparent bug in Netscape 4 browsers, you may want to use this printable version of the full-length Beginner's Guide instead.)
To make downloading the guide easier, you now have several choices: you can access one large file (68K), of you can access three shorter (and thus smaller) files in sequence.
Q: I want to use the primer for a non-profit
activity. How can I do that?
NCSA permits use of the primer for non-profit activities. Please note the following on the photocopied document: This guide was created at NCSA, a unit of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Copyright 1997 by the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois.

Q: I want to use the primer for a for-profit
activity. How can I do that?
We cannot provide permission to reproduce the NCSA Beginner's Guide to HTML, either in print or replicated on a website, to those in a for-profit organization. You can, of course, give the URL to anyone interested in this Web resource.
Q: Can I link to the primer from my home page?
Yes. Please refer to it as the "NCSA (at UIUC) Beginner's Guide to HTML." http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/General/Internet/WWW/HTMLPrimer.html Remember, you cannot sell or reproduce the primer on your server.
Q: Can I download the primer?
Yes, but only if you plan to use it for your personal reference and plan not to distribute the primer to others. There are three versions of the primer available for download:
