International Masterclasses 2026

March 19, 2026 News

Traditionally, in March, the Department of Experimental Particle Physics (F9) organized an international masterclass on particle physics. The event, aimed at introducing particle physics to students, brought together nearly 50 young physics enthusiasts from across Slovenia and the surrounding regions.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about fundamental concepts of particle physics, such as the structure of matter, the Standard Model of elementary particles and the forces between them, the operation of large accelerators and detectors, and the use of particles in medicine.

A special emphasis was placed on practical work, where participants were divided into three groups to analyze measured data recorded with the ATLAS and Belle II detectors, or to simulate radiotherapy with the goal of choosing a treatment plan that would effectively stop tumor growth. At the end, the students presented their results via videoconference to participants from other research centers around the world where the masterclass was held simultaneously.

The sixth consecutive masterclass once again demonstrated that science can be presented to young people in an engaging and understandable way, encouraging them to continue exploring. We look forward to the next meeting in 2027.
